MP4 vs MOV vs MKV: Which Video Format Should You Actually Use?
Most people pick a video format based on whatever their camera defaulted to. But format choice affects compatibility, file size, and whether your video actually plays on the device it's intended for. Here's what I've learned about video formats from building a converter tool — and why the right choice saves you headaches down the line.
The Universal Default: MP4
If you're going to remember one thing from this guide, make it this: MP4 is the safest choice almost every time. It plays on every modern device, every browser, every media player, and every social media platform. There's essentially no situation where an MP4 file won't work.
MP4 uses the H.264 video codec (or H.265/HEVC for newer, more efficient encoding) inside a container that's universally supported. The file sizes are reasonable, the quality is good, and the compatibility is unmatched. When I'm designing a tool that outputs video, I make MP4 the default for exactly this reason.
Use MP4 when you're sharing a video and you don't know what device or software the recipient will use. Use it for social media uploads — YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook all accept MP4 natively. Use it for embedding in websites. Use it for archiving. Honestly, start with "why not MP4?" rather than "why MP4?" — the exceptions are few.
When MOV Makes Sense
MOV is Apple's container format, developed for QuickTime. It's the native format for Final Cut Pro and is widely used in professional video editing workflows. If you're sending files to a video editor, especially one working on a Mac, MOV is often what they'll ask for.
The trade-off: MOV files tend to be larger than MP4 equivalents, and they're less universally compatible outside the Apple ecosystem. Windows users can play MOV files with most modern media players, but they're not as seamless as MP4. Android devices may struggle.
When I'm working on a project that involves professional editing — color grading, compositing, multi-track audio — I use MOV during the editing phase and then export to MP4 for delivery. That's the workflow that balances editing flexibility with final compatibility.
When MKV Is the Right Call
MKV (Matroska) is a modern, open-source container that's excellent for archiving. It supports essentially unlimited audio tracks, subtitle streams, chapters, and metadata — all in a single file.
I use MKV for personal archiving of video content. If I'm ripping a Blu-ray or saving a master copy of a project with multiple audio tracks and subtitles, MKV preserves everything in one container. It's also great for high-bitrate content where file size isn't the primary concern.
The downside: MKV has the weakest device support of the three major formats. Smart TVs, game consoles, and older media players may not recognize MKV files. Browsers generally don't play MKV natively. If you're sharing the file, convert it to MP4 first.
A Quick Word on AVI
AVI is an older format that still shows up, especially on Windows. It's functional and widely compatible on desktop, but it's less efficient than MP4 — meaning larger files for the same quality. I rarely recommend AVI for anything new, but if you're working with legacy files or software that specifically requires AVI, it gets the job done. For everything else, convert to MP4.
The Conversion Mindset: Format for Your Destination
The most useful way to think about video formats is to work backwards from where the video is going. Ask: what formats does the destination accept? If it's a social media platform, MP4. If it's a professional editor, MOV. If it's your personal archive, MKV. If the answer is unclear, MP4.
This is also why a good converter tool matters. You shouldn't have to re-record or re-export a video just because the format is wrong. Convert it, keep the original, and move on.
Pro Tips
Convert from the original, not from an already-converted file. Every conversion pass involves re-encoding, which is lossy. If you need to try a different format or setting, always start from the original source file for the best result.
Check the audio after conversion. Format conversion can change the audio codec along with the video. Before sharing, listen to a few seconds of the output to make sure the audio track is intact and synced.
Resolution survives conversion. Converting from MP4 to MOV doesn't change the resolution — it changes the container. The image quality is determined by the original file's encoding, not the container format you choose.
Batch convert when you can. If you have a folder of videos in the wrong format, convert them all at once rather than one at a time. It's the same amount of total processing time but far less of your personal attention.
Keep the original until you've verified the output. Don't delete the source file immediately after conversion. Open the converted file, check a few points, confirm it works on your target device, then archive or delete the original.
